BAR HARBOR, MAINE – Acadia National Park rangers have responded to a series of emergency incidents and fatalities in the past week, prompting an urgent call for visitor safety as the busy July 4th holiday weekend approaches. Park officials are urging visitors to take significant safety precautions during their time in the park.

Superintendent Kevin Schneider addressed the recent events, acknowledging the profound impact of each loss. Schneider stated that "any fatality in the park is devastating," highlighting the unusual concentration of emergencies. He noted that "having three major incidents in the park this close together is hard to fathom." Schneider praised the efforts of park rangers who responded to these difficult situations, working tirelessly to support victims and their families as the incidents unfolded. The park extends its thoughts to the family and friends affected by these tragedies.

The string of emergencies began on June 23, when Acadia National Park rangers responded to reports concerning a 20-year-old male. The individual had fallen approximately 20 feet while in the climbing area at the South Wall of Champlain Mountain. Upon the arrival of park rangers, the Bar Harbor Fire Department ambulance was already preparing for transport. The patient had been carried to the Park Loop Road by a group of other climbers who were present at the scene.

Just two days later, on June 25, another serious incident unfolded. Park rangers and local emergency medical services personnel were called to a report near the summit of Cedar Swamp Mountain. A man had collapsed and sustained a head injury. When first responders reached the scene, the patient was found to be not breathing and without a pulse. Life Flight of Maine subsequently transported the patient to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. This patient has since passed away from the injuries sustained in the incident.

The series of tragic events continued on June 30, 2025, with park rangers providing assistance in a fatal incident that occurred on the water. This event involved a sailboat that ran aground near Eastern Head on Isle au Haut. Park rangers supported Maine Marine Patrol officers at the scene. Maine Marine Patrol is currently leading the investigation into this specific fatality.

Park officials emphasized that while accidents can occur, proactive planning is crucial for visitors to Acadia. Planning ahead for a visit can help reduce the risk of injury. Furthermore, proper preparation can assist visitors in maximizing their time within the park during what is known to be the peak season for attendance. The advisories come as the park braces for an influx of holiday visitors, reinforcing the need for caution and preparedness on Mount Desert Island's trails and waters.
