Local high school volleyball teams, including Mount Desert Island and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, are set to compete for state championships this weekend, as Bangor Daily News reported. Mount Desert Island will look to defend its Class C state title, while George Stevens Academy aims to claim the Class D championship after a runner-up finish last year. Defending Class A champion Gorham and Class B champion Washington Academy of East Machias are also among the teams vying for titles.

The championship action begins Friday night. The Class D final will feature top seed George Stevens Academy against third seed Woodland at Husson University in Bangor, with the match starting at 7 p.m. Both teams enter the contest with identical 14-2 records. George Stevens Academy previously secured a 3-0 regular season victory over Woodland in Blue Hill on October 6. Last year, George Stevens Academy lost the Class D final to Narraguagus High of Harrington, making this year's championship bid a return to the final for the Blue Hill team.

Saturday will see a full slate of championship matches across two locations. The Class A final will kick off at 10 a.m. at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. This match will feature second seed Gorham, holding a 13-3 record, against fourth seed Scarborough, which stands at 12-4. Gorham is seeking its fourth consecutive Class A crown. The team has already bested Scarborough twice this regular season, securing two 3-2 victories.

Later on Saturday, at 1 p.m., the Class C final will take place at Husson University. This match is of particular interest to island residents, as it will pit top seed Gardiner, with a 13-3 record, against third seed Mount Desert Island, which comes into the final at 9-7. Mount Desert Island is the defending Class C champion, aiming to retain its title. Earlier this month, Gardiner defeated Mount Desert Island 3-2 in their regular season matchup held in Gardiner.

Also on Saturday at 1 p.m., the Class B title game will be held at Southern Maine Community College. This contest will feature two teams with identical 15-1 records: Greely and Washington Academy. Washington Academy is looking to secure its third straight Class B title. Greely previously defeated Washington Academy 3-1 during their regular season encounter on September 25 in Cumberland Center.

The weekend's championship games represent the culmination of the high school girls volleyball season, with teams like Gorham, Washington Academy, and Mount Desert Island striving to defend their state championship legacies. George Stevens Academy seeks to elevate its standing in Class D, building on its strong regular season performance. Spectators will witness high-stakes volleyball across these state-level contests.
