MDI Health has extended an invitation to community members across Mount Desert Island and the surrounding region to join in celebrating the grand opening of MDI Hospital’s new main entrance. The official grand opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday, Nov. 23, beginning at 4 p.m., as The Ellsworth American reported. The public event will be held directly at the location of the new entrance, situated off Main Street. According to organizers, the afternoon celebration will feature a program that includes brief opening remarks from hospital representatives, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the milestone, guided tours showcasing the newly created space, and light refreshments provided for all attendees.
The newly completed main entrance officially opened its doors to patients on Oct. 19, establishing an updated entry point for individuals seeking medical care and visiting hospital facilities. The realization of the new entrance structure was made possible through the support of the Building Our Future Campaign, a strategic fundraising initiative designed to secure the financial resources needed to update, modernize, and enhance healthcare infrastructure across the hospital facility.
Discussing the significance of the completed entrance, Chrissi Maguire, president and chief executive officer of MDI Health, told The Ellsworth American that the finished structure represents "so much more than a new space" for the hospital and the surrounding town. Maguire stated that the new entrance reflects the deep care that community members hold for one another, as well as a shared, long-term commitment to the future of MDI Hospital. In her comments, Maguire expressed profound gratitude to everyone who placed their trust in the vision for the new entrance and worked to bring it to completion, noting that hospital leadership is eager to join together with local residents and supporters to mark the occasion.
The ceremony on Nov. 23 will serve as a dedicated occasion to acknowledge and honor the broad range of supporters and professionals who played a role in bringing this phase of the campus project to completion. MDI Health announced that the event will formally honor donors who contributed financial support to the Building Our Future Campaign, along with members of the MDI Health Board of Trustees who helped guide the overall project planning. Additionally, the celebration will recognize hospital employees and volunteers for their continued service, as well as community partners who supported the effort.
Professional partners instrumental in the physical development of the project will also be recognized during the grand opening program. MDI Health specifically highlighted the contributions of construction manager Landry/French, which oversaw construction operations at the Main Street site, and architecture firm SMRT, which handled the design and planning for the new entrance structure.
The opening of the main entrance marks a critical early phase within MDI Health’s comprehensive Campus Improvement Project. This larger multi-phase facility effort is designed to overhaul multiple operational areas of the hospital campus. Key components of the ongoing Campus Improvement Project include a significant physical expansion of the Emergency Department, targeted modifications designed to streamline and improve interior navigation for visitors and patients within the facility, a newly constructed dedicated emergency entrance, and a covered ambulance bay designed to accommodate incoming emergency vehicles and care teams.
Hospital officials confirmed that construction on the MDI Hospital campus will continue in distinct phases moving forward. As part of this planned sequence of improvements, the newly expanded Emergency Department is expected to complete construction and open to the public in early 2028.
