The National Park Service announced planned, phased closures for sections of Acadia National Park's Park Loop Road, with operations set to begin Tuesday, October 15. The closures are scheduled to accommodate essential culvert replacements and roadside repairs, impacting visitors through late November before the park's annual winter shutdown.
From Tuesday, October 15, through Saturday, November 16, a single lane will be closed to all users on Park Loop Road. This initial closure affects the section located between the start of the one-way portion and Cadillac Summit Road. The National Park Service confirmed that the one-way section of Park Loop Road will remain accessible during this period. Visitors planning to use Cadillac Summit Road, which requires vehicle reservations through October 27, 2024, are advised by the park to plan ahead and allow for potential traffic delays during this lane reduction.
Further restrictions will take effect on Sunday, November 17. From this date, the section of Park Loop Road situated between the start of the one-way portion and Cadillac Summit Road will be fully closed to all uses until further notice. The National Park Service anticipates being able to temporarily reopen this specific segment to all users for a short window, from Thursday, November 28, through Saturday, November 30.
Also beginning Sunday, November 17, another temporary closure will be implemented to accommodate roadside repairs. This closure will affect all uses of Park Loop Road between the Jordan Pond north parking lot and Cadillac Summit Road. During this particular closure, Cadillac Summit Road will be inaccessible to visitors. The park expects to be able to temporarily reopen this section of Park Loop Road, along with Cadillac Summit Road, to all uses for two distinct periods: from Friday, November 22, through Sunday, November 24, and again from Thursday, November 28, through Saturday, November 30.
These phased closures and temporary reopenings precede the park's standard seasonal road closure for the winter months. The National Park Service will implement its annual closure for motor vehicles on both Park Loop Road and Cadillac Summit Road starting Sunday, December 1. These roadways are scheduled to remain closed to motor vehicles until Monday, April 14, marking the end of the winter season.
