The National Park Service has announced a series of phased closures and access restrictions for Park Loop Road within Acadia National Park, beginning October 15. The work, which includes the replacement of culverts and various roadside repairs, will affect different sections of the popular roadway through the fall season.

Starting Tuesday, October 15, and continuing through Saturday, November 16, all users of Park Loop Road will encounter a single lane closure. This restriction will be implemented on the section of the road situated between the commencement of its one-way portion and Cadillac Summit Road. While this work is underway, the one-way segment of Park Loop Road will remain open and accessible to visitors. Those planning to visit Cadillac Summit Road, particularly individuals who have secured vehicle reservations, are advised by the National Park Service to anticipate potential traffic delays and to allocate additional time for their travel plans to the summit. Vehicle reservations for Cadillac Summit Road are a requirement through October 27, 2024.

Further closures are scheduled to begin on Sunday, November 17, impacting different segments of Park Loop Road. One significant closure will affect the section between the start of the one-way segment and Cadillac Summit Road, which will be entirely closed to all uses from November 17 until further notice. However, the National Park Service expects this specific section to temporarily reopen to all users for a short period, from Thursday, November 28, through Saturday, November 30.

Also commencing November 17, a separate temporary closure will be put in place for all uses on Park Loop Road between the Jordan Pond north parking lot and Cadillac Summit Road. This closure is necessary to allow for roadside repairs. During this period, Cadillac Summit Road will be rendered inaccessible to all traffic. The park anticipates being able to temporarily reopen this particular section of Park Loop Road, along with Cadillac Summit Road, to all users across two distinct windows: from Friday, November 22, through Sunday, November 24, and again from Thursday, November 28, through Saturday, November 30.

These maintenance efforts precede the park's annual seasonal road closure. The National Park Service confirmed that its regular seasonal closure will take effect on Sunday, December 1. From this date, both Park Loop Road and Cadillac Summit Road will be closed to all motor vehicles, a status that will persist until April 14 of the following year. Visitors are encouraged to be aware of these changing access conditions as the park transitions into its winter season.
